Secret Cinema Presents Guardians of the Galaxy

Secret Cinema recreates Contraxia, the pleasure playground where different Ravager clans meet, in an immersive movie experience of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. 

I am only a comic fan by marriage. Yes, my better half is a big fan of all things Marvel-related: Spider Man, Deadpool, IronMan, Captain America. In other words, he is a big dork with a huge heart. We indulged his inner-geekdom by attending Comic Con London earlier this year. When we heard Secret Cinema’s theme was Marvel’s ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Vol 2, we had to go! It just so happened the only weekend available was on our wedding anniversary. So we booked and invited another couple to join us for some intergalactic fun, and celebrated 14 years of marriage!

To Contraxia or Bust

The ‘gathering of the clans’ began at Wembley Park tube. Here soldiers are looking for new recruits of ravagers for their respective clans. Factions dressed in different colours with wild wigs and face glitter make their way to a secret ravager location. You would be forgiven if you thought we were going to a Lady Gaga concert at Wembley Stadium. The soldiers directed to a secret location where all the ravager clans gather. Where, you ask? To the pleasure playground of Contraxia or bust. Our ravager crew clad in blue wearing funky sunglasses, military boots, and long cloaks to reunite with fellow Atomic Dreamers. 

Inside a disused warehouse a short walk from Wembley Stadium, Secret Cinema did an amazing job recreating Contraxia. The visual and lighting effects including snowstorms and sandstroms added to the whole immersive experience. There are several areas for interactive games, dancing, and live music. You can share Peter Quill’s love for pop songs over classic hits such as ‘Hooked on a Feeling,’ ‘O-O-H Child,’ ‘Escape’, and ‘Come and Get Your Love,’ to add to the nostalgic factor. Bonus points if you can find an old-school Walkman to accessorise your outfit. It is all about an immersive experience. Inside you can trade goods for units, complete various missions, or just people watch, which is part of the fun. If you’re feeling peckish, there are plenty of stands to grab food and bars at every corner here at the pleasure playground of Contraxia. 

An Intergalactic Cinema Experience

The grand finale takes place in Nowhere where there is a scene played out by professional actors featuring all the main characters Star-lord, Gamora, Drax, Yandu, and The Collector. As ravagers, you also participate in the scene to stop The Collector from getting his hands on the Embers of Genesis. Then it is on to the expansive cinema to watch a screening of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 with  lighting effects during major intergalactic fights. The whole experience is about 5 hours in total. There is a 2:30pm or 5:30pm tickets on weekends.

A day date at Secret Cinema

For big Marvel fans like us, it was good fun channelling our inner nerd. Indeed, an unconventional way way to celebrate another year of marriage. And the perfect Guardians of the Galaxy-themed party in the lead up to Halloween.
