11th Buddiversary: The Privilege of Watching Your Dog Grow Old

Happy 11th Buddiversary! A sliding door moment 11 years ago when we found Buddy on the suburban streets of Sacramento!

They say a dog is a (wo)man’s best friend, but Buddy has taken that job description and added a few extra bullet points: snack inspector, bed hog, and professional napper.

Today marks our 11th Buddiversary! That fateful day on 17th December 2014 when we found Buddy on the suburban streets of Sacramento. My family came together for Christmas as it would be my cancer-stricken mother’s last one. Dread, tears, sorrow, sadness suffocated us, but we were determined to share a joyous family Christmas together. And then Buddy trotted in like a furry miracle and brought love and light to our family during those difficult months.

The Love of a Dog

For the past decade, Buddy has been a huge part of life. From family deaths to parenthood; the lows and highs, through it all, Buddy has been a constant source of comfort and unconditional love. It is a privilege watching our beloved Buddy grow old. Gone are the days of marathon walks. Buddy now prefers:

  • Long snoozes (preferably smack in the middle of the bed or sofa).
  • Treats (but only the meaty kind—renal diet kibble is an insult).
  • Ear rubs (still the ultimate currency of love).

Sure, his cataract-clouded eyes and creaky joints tell the story of age, but his personality remains calm, sweet, and loveable.

Continuing from the theme of 90s R&B, Lauryn Hill would sing:

You’re just too good to be true
Can’t take my eyes off of you
You’d be like heaven to touch
I wanna hold you so much
At long last love has arrived
And I thank God I’m alive
You’re just too good to be true
Can’t take my eyes off of you

We love you Buddy, trust in me when I say it’s okay (to sleep on our bed)!

Happy 11th Buddiversary!
