A Christmas Carol at the Old Vic Theatre

A Christmas Carol reminds us that generosity and kindness are the true spirit of the season.

Charles Dickens’ classic tale follows Ebenezer Scrooge, a bitter miser transformed after encounters with the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come. Each spirit reveals moments that expose his loneliness, the consequences of his choices, and the bleak future awaiting him. Faced with the truth of his own life, Scrooge awakens on Christmas morning renewed — embracing compassion, generosity, and the joy of human connection.

There are numerous adaptation of this beloved Christmas story. My personal favourite is the George C. Scott version, and The Muppet Christmas Carol remains a beloved family staple. This year, as a special treat, we booked tickets to see A Christmas Carol at the Old Vic — and it truly was a delight.

On Kindness, Generosity, and Gratitude

Transforming The Old Vic into a magnificent circular theatre with lights cascading from the ceiling adds to the atmosphere. Staff dressed in Victorian attire welcomed us warmly, offering mince pies and clementines as we stepped into a lively, immersive Dickensian world.

The production itself was fast, playful, and wonderfully theatrical. Actors shifted roles seamlessly in full view, keeping the story dynamic and engaging, supported by beautiful live music and clever stagecraft. That said, it was faithful to Dickens’ beloved tale while feeling fresh and full of energy.

Scrooge was portrayed as deeply human and deeply flawed — shaped by childhood fear, loneliness, abandonment, and loss — making his redemption feel both earned and moving. The use of light, sound, and shadow created an eerie atmosphere during each ghostly visit. His shame and remorse were palpable, and his joyful transformation on Christmas morning was uplifting. The production even wove in moments of humour, especially during the Christmas Day feast, complete with food sliding down a chute, a giant turkey, and an avalanche of desserts.

This was a truly special theatre experience. At home, we continued the theme with our pint‑sized Dickens Christmas village, lovingly curated by our very own “Clark Griswold,” aka Kenz.

This timeless story is a beautiful reminder that the festive season is, at its heart, about gratitude, kindness, generosity, and compassion — values we carry with us each day as we celebrate.
