Ali Wong Live in London
Get your tickets to Ali Wong Live. Post-divorced and funny as ever, comedian Ali Wong lands in London for a highly-anticipated evening of laughter, dishing out for newly-single love life.
I have been a fan of Ali Wong ever since becoming a mother. It was Lady Yeya’s maiden voyage to California at 3 months old, homebound on a Saturday evening, when my sister suggested we watch her Netflix comedy specials. “Baby Cobra” (2016) and “Hard Knock Wife” (2018) are both hilarious takes on pregnancy and parenthood. Yes, “joining a moms group on maternity leave is like “The Walking Dead,” you’ve just gotta hook up with a crew to survive!” I laughed so hard until I cried. I’m a huge fan of Ali Wong – thanks for getting me through those tough days of early motherhood.
Alongside Margaret Cho, it is rare to see Asian American female comedians. Born in San Francisco to a Vietnamese mother and Chinese-American father, Ali Wong pokes fun that she is both ‘fancy’ Asian and ‘jungle’ Asian. In 2022, Ali Wong released her third Netflix comedy special “Ali Wong: Don Wong” which talks about her wild fantasies and single people. But I did question her relationship with her husband. Well, it turns out, two months later, Ali Wong and her husband announce their divorce after eight years of marriage and two kids.
What’s Your “Beef”?
With her whirlwind stand-up tour and promoting the Netflix dark comedy “Beef” (2023) Ali Wong is one busy mom. “Beef” follows the aftermath of a road rage between two strangers, Amy Lau played by Ali Wong and Danny Cho played by Steven Yeun, in a parking lot of a home improvement store (think Homebase) in Los Angeles. Both characters are deeply flawed, dealing with issues of trauma stemming from childhood. This dark comedy touches upon divorce, infidelity, sibling/parent relationships, motherhood, and resentment. The last episode when both characters get into yet another road rage and crash their cars in the Hollywood Hills. Wounded and dehydrated, Amy and Danny are delirious and go on a long philosophical discussion about the meaning of life.
Ali Wong Live at Apollo Eventim
When she announced her tour dates in London, I immediately booked six tickets for Ali Wong Live. Joining us were our NY-based friends on their last night in London and another good couple friend from Lady Yeya’s school. Her husband wanted to keep it as a surprise until the day of. He nearly got there until an Ali Wong Insta-ad popped up on her feed the night before and she put it all together.
We all met for a Lebanese lunch at Comptoir Libanais at the Duke of York Square of hummus, falafel, chicken kebabs, and halloumi. Then we went back to our friend’s rented townhouse in Chelsea where their lovely au pair looked after the kids. We opened a Veuve Clicquot Extra Brut for a toast and off we went for a memorable evening of laughter with good friends.
Supporting her on tour Ali Wong Live is another Asian American comedian Sheng Wang, whose comedy is more dry, finding humour in daily life and making fun of the spice ‘cumin’. He was a great opening act for Ali Wong. As expected, Ali Wong’s humour is totally inappropriate but exceptionally funny! She talks about dating as a newly single 40-something and getting on until she gets a concussion. If you got your hands on Ali Wong Live tickets, then you are in for a fun and funny evening. I won’t spoil the fun.
