A Sparkly Stroll and Lessons & Carols at Westminster Abbey

Christmas in London is a season of quiet glamour—twinkling lights, historic streets, and a timeless charm that makes the city feel beautifully alive.

If there’s one thing London does exceptionally well, it’s Christmas — especially the festive lights that transform Oxford Street, Regent Street, and Carnaby Street into a glowing winter wonderland. Every December, we take a Christmassy walk through central London. So this year we met friends at the Disney Store for a joyfully busy stroll from Selfridges to Fortnum & Mason via Bond Street.

Selfridges, the department store famous for its iconic yellow bags, unveiled a magical collaboration with Disney. Each window featured a whimsical scene from beloved classics — Pinocchio, Cinderella, Peter Pan, Lady & the Tramp, and 101 Dalmatians. The kids were loving it, and even the adults couldn’t help smiling at the nostalgia.

A short walk away, Bond Street was its usual picture of elegance. Dior, Chanel, and Cartier dazzled with sparkling displays, while Burlington Arcade — wrapped in its festive red bow — buzzed with window‑shoppers and people‑watchers soaking in the atmosphere.

Our final stop was Fortnum & Mason, beautifully transformed into its signature advent‑calendar façade. Inside and out, it remained the perfect place for gift hampers, teas, coffees, and biscuits. The windows were a fantastical mix of unicorns, parakeets, lions, and more — pure festive whimsy.

Yes, it was busy, but the bustle only added to the lively Christmas spirit. After saying goodbye to our friends, we hopped on the tube for a short ride to Westminster Abbey for the Service of Lessons and Carols.

Westminster Abbey: Lessons and Carols

Together with another family, we were fortunate to secure free tickets to the Service of Lessons and Carols at Westminster Abbey – a truly beautiful experience. Stepping inside the grand abbey, surrounded by ancient stones and soaring Gothic arches, felt like entering a sanctuary far removed from the busy streets outside. There was a calmness, a reverence, that settled over everyone.

The hour‑long service was simple yet profoundly moving, weaving together scripture readings that traced the Christmas story with angelic choral music. Toward the end, the Abbey glowed softly as handheld candles were lit. And together we sang “O Come Let Us Adore Him” in gentle harmony.

We left Westminster Abbey with full hearts and an immense sense of gratitude — for the season, for the beauty of the moment, and for all the blessings in our lives.
