Elf the Musical on the West End: Festive and Fun
Elf the Musical has returned to London’s West End, so we headed to the Dominion Theatre for a festive afternoon filled with sparkle, laughter, and Christmas magic.
When the beloved Christmas classic The Elf the Musical arrived on the West End, we couldn’t resist an afternoon of festive fun—laughing all the way to the North Pole.
My family and I adore Christmas movies during the holiday season. From Home Alone to It’s a Wonderful Life and A Christmas Carol, nothing gets us into the festive spirit quite like a feel‑good Christmas film. And yes, Die Hard absolutely counts as a Christmas movie—Gremlins too.
Our friends, former Londoners now living in New Jersey, were visiting and keen to see a West End show. What better choice than Elf the Musical for an afternoon of family‑friendly theatre in London with everyone’s favourite oversized elf, Buddy?

Jazzy Hands and Tap Shoes
Based on the much‑loved film starring Will Ferrell, Elf the Musical tells the story of Buddy, a human raised by elves at the North Pole. When he discovers the truth about his origins, he travels to New York City to find his biological father, a senior executive at a children’s publishing house. With his innocence, boundless enthusiasm, and unshakeable cheer, Buddy manages to spread Christmas joy wherever he goes.
The stage adaptation adds sparkle, dazzle, and plenty of fun to the familiar story. With catchy songs, upbeat music, and a generous dose of humour, we found ourselves laughing nonstop. Buddy’s infectious energy and impeccable comedic timing were a delight, and the supporting cast shone with beautifully choreographed jazzy‑hands numbers and tap‑dance sequences.
For a West End production, the set design was impressively dynamic. Clever lighting created depth, and the bright, colourful staging—full of festive reds and greens—shifted seamlessly from the North Pole to a New York office, a Manhattan apartment, a department store, and even Central Park. And of course, they couldn’t resist poking fun at their neighbouring state of New Jersey and its… distinctive aroma. We also learned that Santa is an Arsenal fan—who knew.

Spreading Christmas Joy
At its core, Elf the Musical is a story about family, connection, and the joy of the holiday season. Perfect for anyone searching for West End Christmas shows or holiday activities in London. Sharing this West End experience with friends we’ve known for over a decade made it even more special. Good friends truly are the family you choose, and this Christmas, we’re especially grateful to celebrate with the people who mean the most to us.
