Happy Father’s Day 2023

Happy Father’s Day to all you wonderful dads! Hope you enjoyed your dad surrounded by lots of food, love, and laughter.

Over Father’s Day weekend, we had a last minute visitor from California. Amongst Kenz’ tight-knit group of friends, there are two singleton friends who live the bachelor lifestyle. Weekend jaunts to Los Angeles or skiing in Lake Tahoe; pub nights and fancy dinners; and many Tinder dates.

About a week ago, Kenz’ friend J decided to book a last minute trip to Crete with a stopover in London to spend the weekend with us. His last trip to London was September 2016 when he joined us for Oktoberfest in Munich to mark my father-in-law’s 70th birthday. Dressed in traditional Bavarian lederhosen and dirndl, we had a fabulous time at Oktoberfest.

Happy Father's Day
Foods Markets around London Bridge

Seven years on, with more grey hairs and few more wrinkles, and although we met up in California recently, it was nice to reunite in London for some good quality time. It was surprisingly a low-key but busy weekend, visiting different food markets around London Bridge.

Straight off the 10:30am flight from SFO, J and Kenz met at London Bridge Station and made a beeline to Flat Iron Square (45 Southwark St, London SE1 9HP) which now has their own taproom and microbrewery – Hop Exchange. Here my friend met up with an old acquaintance he hasn’t seen since his last trip. (Un)lucky for J, we had a SDC Parents Pub Night at a local pub that evening and dragged him along for a night cap.

The next day, we did a short tourist circuit to see Tower Bridge and walked along the South Bank to Borough Market, the granddaddy and the best food market in London. We took him to Kenz’ old hang outs The Rake and The Wheatsheaf before the boys went to Vinegar Yard (72-82 St. Thomas Street, London SE1 3QX). A relatively newcomer to the food market scene, Vinegar Yard is a buzzy outdoor venue where all the cool young kids hang out.

Happy Father's Day the Best!
Rolled Sirloin on the Big Green Egg

When good friends roll through London, Kenz likes to fire up the Big Green Egg. Earlier in the morning, we picked up a 2.5kg rolled sirloin from our local butcher. In true Mediterranean-style, we had dinner at 9:30pm on a balmy London evening. Over delicious food, good wine, and fun vibes, it reminded me of those summer nights in California.

On Father’s Day, Kenz was lucky to spend time with his little family and his “brother” from another mother. Happy Father’s Day!
