Mudchute Farm in the Isle of Dogs

An urban farm with views of Canary Wharf, Mudchute Farm is home to over 100 animals from cows, llamas, pigs and sheep. A must for the animal-obsessed kids, plus it is free!

Who would have guessed that there is an urban farm right in the heart of the Isle of Dogs? Mudchute Farm is a hidden gem for families with young kids. Not only is it accessible on the DLR, it is also free and open to the public every day. We visit Mudchute Farm regularly especially when the weather is nice. After a morning at the farm, we like to walk to Canary Wharf for lunch. And if I am really on top of it, we’ll take Lady Yeya for a play session at Mudlarks at the Museum of the Docklands.

An Urban Farm in London

As one of the largest urban farms in London covering 34 acres, kiddos will love seeing different farm animals. There are over 100 animals on the farm from cows, pigs, llamas, sheep, goats, horses, donkeys, rabbits, and chickens. The footpath is mostly buggy friendly with an exception of a few bridle paths. Larger grazing animals are located on the outer enclosure where you can take yourself on a self-guided tour. Be sure to look around the peaceful surroundings and enjoy the views of Canary Wharf. Smaller animals, birds, and baby lamb are located in the main courtyard known as the ‘Pets Corner.”

As a registered community charity, Mudchute Farm does a wonderful job hosting free children’s activities over the summer holidays and half-term breaks. From donkey rides to baby chick handling and environmental play, Mudchute Farm is a great place for children to learn about life on the farm. Food for the animals is available for purchase from the farm. There are plenty of handwashing facilities at the courtyard so don’t be afraid to get up close with these adorable farm animals, especially the baby lamb.

Urban Farm: Mudchute Farm
Picnics and Mudchute Kitchen

When hunger strikes, there are designated picnic areas at Mudchute Farm if you wish to bring your own food. For those coming from Crossharbour DLR, you can always pick up some picnic items at the local Asda. For refreshments and an extra dose of caffeine, Mudchute Kitchen is open daily except on Mondays. If you are feeling extra peckish, you can also order breakfast, jacket potatoes, and sandwiches at the Mudchute Kitchen.

Mudchute Farm is accessible from the following DLR stations: Crossharbour, Mudchute and Island Gardens. I like using Crossharbour DLR for step free access via the Asda parking lot. Mudchute DLR is not advisable if you are travelling with a buggy as there is a step path leading up to Mudchute.

Overall, Mudchute Farms is a great place for kids especially those obsessed with furry animals. I always like to bring a few farm-related to read enroute to Mudchute Farm along with her Schliech animals. It is a chance to experience “Old MacDonald’s” farm without leaving London.
