Stick Man Live in Theatre

Stick Man Live is a lovely West End adaptation of Julia Donaldson and Axel Schedffler’s all-time favourite book who has a misadventure trying to get back to his family tree.

Having enjoyed the West End adaptation What the Ladybird Heard in August, we wanted to see another live children’s production over the Christmas break. Lady Yeya adores all of Julia Donaldson’s books with Stick Man being one of her favourites especially during the holidays. She squealed with delight as we travelled to central London with one of her best friends for a mommy-daughter theatre date.

A Lively Children’s Adaptation

With 400 seats, Leicester Square Theatre is perfect for an intimate children’s production. With booster seats, kids can see the main stage with the family tree raised in the centre. Off the side are several musical instruments cleverly used by one of the actors throughout the adaptation. A white backdrop completes the set to allow for some simple visual effects throughout the production.

Stick Man Live is a brilliant and funny adaptation by Freckle Production is full of beautiful singing and dancing by a three-person cast: Stick Man, Stick Lady Love, and an Actor/Musician who played various characters including Santa. Even with a few minor deviations from the original book, children can follow the storyline without confusion. From start to finish, we were impressed with the creativity and talent of all the actors. The cast did a wonderful job engaging with the children such as having the kids “catch” the imaginary ball.

Stick Man, oh Stick Man Beware of…

As the story goes, Stick Man  goes for a jog but has a misadventure.

Stick Man, oh Stick Man, beware of
A furry dog who picks Stick Man to use as a fetch stick.
A little girl who throws Stick Man as a play pooh-stick.
A white swan who mistakes Stick Man as a twig for her nest.
A sunburnt dad on a beach who uses Stick Man as a mast.

All Stick Man wants to do is to get back to his family tree before Christmas. He wishes to reunite with his Stick Lady Love and stick children three. Stick Man find himself inside a home and then helps Santa, who is stuck, down the chimney. In return, Stick Man and Santa ride on his sleigh to deliver presents to fast-asleep girls and fast-asleep boys before one final drop. And at last, Stick Man makes it back to the family tree in time to celebrate Christmas.

Stick Man, oh Stick Man, thank you for a  perfect way to celebrate the festive season with a witty West End adaptation of a beloved book.

Stick Man Live (55 minutes) runs until mid-January 2022 at Leicester Square Theatre.
