The Emirates Cup 2013

Preseason football is underway. No, I’m not talking about American football though I understand the official preseason just kicked off, I’m referring to the footie (Americans: soccer). On Saturday, a group of die-hard Arsensal fans got together for Day 1 of the Emirates Cup, which is a pre-season friendly played by four teams and hosted by Arsenal aka ‘The Gunners’ annually.

This year’s teams included Galatasaray, FC Porto, Napoli, and The Gunners. Each team plays two matches over two days. The competition is based on points where three points are awarded for a win, one point for a draw, and none for a loss. The team with the most points wins the tournament.

The first match was between Galatasaray and FC Porto which was a rather dull game but we were excited to see Didier Drogba play. Galatasaray won 1-0. The second match between Napoli and Arsenal was far more interesting where Arsenal staged an amazing comeback to equalise at 2-2 but couldn’t quite close out the game.

It was a great day out under the glorious sunshine (yes, we’re having a real summer!). Even coming from a Tottenham Spurs fan, the Emirates Stadium is always good fun. The best part is being able to walk to Upper Street in Angel for post-game dinner and drinks, this time at John Salt for fun dinner and conversations over craft beers and summery cocktails.

Look forward to a new season of football on both sides of the pond.
