Year of the Snake 2025
Happy Lunar New Year to all those celebrating the Year of the Snake!
Across Asia, countries usher in the Lunar New Year celebrating Year of the Snake. Lunar New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, marks the end of winter and the arrival of spring – a time of hope and renewal. As the lucky colour, red is everywhere! From red lanterns to red envelopes; from red clothes to red firecrackers and red and gold dragons.

Year of the Snake
According to my HK-based sister, the Year of the Snake brings unique energy. In Chinese astrology, the snake embodies intelligence, adaptability and elegance – promising a year of brimming with progress and exciting opportunities. May these qualities manifest in your lives, blessing your families with abundance, good fortune, harmony and success in all endeavors!
Feast and Celebrations
Friends and family gather together for a feast, usually an eight-course meal as “eight” is a lucky number in Chinese culture signifying wealth and prosperity. Kids are given lucky red envelopes as gifts, wishing them a successful year and good health. For me growing up in a Chinese household, Lunar New Year is a bigger affair than Christmas. Alongside family celebrations, we also have time-honoured traditions such as paying respects to our ancestors either at the family altar or graveside visit.
Chinatown for Dim Sum
Braving the crowds, we went to Chinatown to check out the Lunar New Year festivities. It is important for Lady Yeya to celebrate her mixed cultural heritage being half Chinese, quarter Indian and quarter Anglo. Chinatown was a sea of red lanterns everywhere with several lion dancing around the businesses. On the recommendation of our friends, we went to Tao Tao Ju for dim sum where we devoured everything from shrimp dumplings to siu mai, char siu, and long noodles.
Happy Year of the Snake! May it be filled with prosperity, happiness, and success!
