Mum’s Night Out: Scummy Mummies

It was a night full of laughter and a lot of oestrogen as comedian duo and local Southeast London mums,  Ellie Gibson and Helen Thorn, aka Scummy Mummies, hit Broadway Theatre for a scummy confession of motherhood woes.

One of my mum friends who is returning to work after her third maternity leave suggested we go out for a Mum’s Night. And it just so happens that the comedian duo Scummy Mummies was playing at the newly refurbished Broadway Theatre. So she organised a little reunion with a lady gang from our old nursery for a night out of comedy and G&Ts.

Although Ellie and Helen of Scummy Mummies are local Southeast Londoners, admittedly I have never heard about Scummy Mummies who also host a hilarious podcast about all things motherhood. My usual go-to podcast for parenting humour is Parenting Hell with comedian dads Rob Beckett and Josh Widdicombe. I’m all about having a good sense of humour to get us through those #momfail days. For example, the other day I accidentally gave my daughter a huge black eye when I was vacuuming when the Dyson hit her eye as she snuck up behind me.

Best Parenting Hack: A Lot of Humour

Scummy Mummies is a series of funny monologues, crude jokes, and hilarious songs all performed in colour lycra body suits or “mum” PJs. It was a great evening of laugh-until-you-cry relatable jokes about motherhood – the good, the bad, and the ugly. Early motherhood is anything but glamorous – poo, pee, puke – you name it. For mamas who are in the thick of it, I promise that it does get easier and a lot more fun!

It was nice to see so many lovely mums out and about in a great mood, including a group of mums from Lady Yeya’s reception class. As you can imagine, the venue was 99.99% women – majority mums, some grannies, and even some childless friends who are so “tall because they sit on a high pile of disposable income.” And yes, we were all congratulated for leaving the bedtime routine to all the doting dads who are on “babysitting duties.” Well it’s not babysitting when it’s your own child according to Scrummy Mummies.

Top 10 List of Annoying Things about Parenthood

Scummy Mummies advise you to run away from the PTA if they ask you to volunteer for the Christmas Faire. Hmmmm…is that why everyone avoids me like a plague seeing that I am on the Reception Class Reps? Amongst of the top things that annoying Scummy Mummies  the most around parenthood include:

  • Swimming lessons… because it is a bit of faff
  • World Book Day…another dress up day?
  • Judgement grandparents… no comments.
  • Dry birthday parties… b/c spending half your weekend at kids birthday parties is so fun.

It was a great night out! Just a little reminder that the best parenting hack is a bit of humour and a lot of laughter, surrounded by a trusted crew of mom friends. Cheers to all the lovely mummies. Can’t wait to celebrate Mothering Sunday in a few weeks.
