Kids Week Theatre: Room on the Broom
Another classic Julia Donaldson’s Room on the Broom hits the West End for a fun day at the theatre. Iggety ziggety zaggety zoom! Whoosh! They were gone.
It is never too early to get kids into art and literature. Lady Yeya loves all of Julia Donaldson’s children’s books. As such we try to see all of Julia Donaldson’s live theatre productions. So far, we have seen What the Lady Bird Heard, Zog and the Flying Doctors, and Stickman. So when we heard Room on the Broom was landing at the West End, we had to go. Lucky for us, we snagged tickets during Kids Week when children enjoy half off tickets at participating theatres for the month of August. It is the perfect time to introduce children to the world of performing arts. And whoosh we were off.
A Story about a Witch and her Cat
The 60 minute theatrical production is presented by Tall Stories and is currently playing at Lyric Theatre on Shaftesbury Avenue until September 2022. For those not based in London, the production will go on national tour around the UK.
The story follows the hilarious journey of a witch who has a ‘very tall hat, and long ginger hair, which she wore in a plait’ and her cat on a broomstick. Along the way they picked up a few friends – a friendly dog, a green bird, and a dripping wet frog. But the broomstick buckled until pressure and begins to crack. A hungry dragon appeared who was ‘planning to have witch and chip for my tea’. But ‘from out of a ditch rose a horrible beast’ who told the dragon off ‘That’s my Witch.’ Together, the witch and her friends filled up her caldron of a lily, cone, twig, and bone before she muttered a spell Iggety ziggety zaggety zoom! And Whoosh! They were gone on her truly magnificent broom.
A delightful production for those who adore Julia Donaldson books. It was a truly magnificent day out for our favourite little people. Hopefully going to the theatre will be a summertime tradition.
