An Anniversary Escape at AIRE Ancient Baths
A truly relaxed escape from everyday life at AIRE Ancient Baths to mark our anniversary.
Anniversaries always seem to come with the same question: what should we do to make this one feel special? Dinner is lovely, drinks are easy, but this year we wanted something a little different. Something that felt less like an evening out and more like a proper escape from everyday life.
Kenz certainly delivered, booking us the “Escape Together” experience at AIRE Ancient Baths.
We dropped our dear daughter off for a sleepover, happily embraced the novelty of a kid-free evening, and headed towards Charing Cross. What I hadn’t expected was to discover an entire world of underground baths hidden away in the heart of The Strand.
Tucked down a quiet street in the former home of J. M. Barrie, author of Peter Pan, AIRE feels wonderfully removed from the bustle of central London. After a warm welcome, we headed downstairs to the changing rooms where pretty much everything had been thought of for us: robes, water slippers, towels, toiletries and styling products. All we really needed to bring was our swimwear.
And then we stepped underground and without our phones.

AIRE: Thermal Bath Circuit
Dim lighting, flickering candles, relaxing music and delicate aromas immediately changed the pace of the evening. After a quick tour from the staff, for the next few hours, there was absolutely nowhere else we needed to be. Our thermal bath circuit included:
- Tepidarium: A wonderfully warm 38°C bath and the largest of the pools, with quieter corners perfect for relaxing together.
- Frigidarium: The cold plunge. Definitely a wake-up call after all that warmth!
- Caldarium: The hottest of the baths and bliss for tired muscles.
- Balneum: A bubbling hydrotherapy bath that felt like one enormous massage.
- Vaporium: A warm, atmospheric steam room, complete with its own cold plunge if you’re feeling brave.
- Floatarium: One of my favourites. A salt-water bath where you can simply lie back, float and experience that wonderful feeling of weightlessness.
- Rest areas: Quiet spaces to pause between baths, rehydrate and linger over water or tea.
With numbers carefully managed, the whole experience felt peaceful rather than crowded. There was no rushing from one thing to the next. We could simply wander between the baths, stop when we wanted and properly switch off.
Then it was time for the second part of our experience. We took the lift to the treatment rooms for a 90-minute couples massage, working from head to toe. It was lovely to have a few uninterrupted hours together. No phones. No schedules. No parental logistics. Nothing to organise or think about. Just us.
Happy anniversary!
